Formed in 1980 Tonias Engineers has a long history of providing civil engineering and
related consulting services to municipalities, developers and state agencies. Tonias
Engineers has also demonstrated the ability to work with other design firms on multi-phased
projects such as the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program in Rochester, New York, which,
amont other tasks, involved the: overall project management, physical and mathematical modeling,
coordination and supervision of the geotechnical exploration program, development of hydraulic,
structural and seismic design criteria guidelines and standard drawings, preparation of
construction specifications, review of the design of the project section designers, conduct
of a public participation program, and development of environmental and cultural resources.
Areas of expertise which Tonias Engineers offers its clients includes the following:
LAND PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
The planning and development of new communities, industrial sites and commercial developments
involve orchestrated effort of various professional disciplines. Members of the Tonias
Engineers staff possess the knowledge and experience in the following component disciplines:
planning and layout, traffic flow and street design, sanitary sewers, water network design,
grading, storm sewer design, surface drainage, and environmental assessment. Longstanding
professional relationships exist with such other professionals as architects, landscape
architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, surveyors and economists. Tonias Engineers'
computer capabilities are ideally suited in the design of geometric layout and utility, storm,
sanitary and water design phases of the the project.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
The staff of Tonias Engineers has planned, designed and supervised the construction of
many diversified types of structures including bridges, rock and soft-ground tunnels, dams,
hydraulic structures, industrial buildings, sewer and water treatment plants, pumping
stations, office buildings, shopping centers, building rehabilitation projects and residential
and multiple housing.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
The geotechnical division of the firm provides services for the development of
subsurface exploratory programs, the analysis and evaluation of soil and rock data,
the determination and probabilistic evaluation of earth retaining structures and
soil-rock foundation systems, the analysis of soil for settlement predictability,
the development of criteria for the design of rock and soft-ground tunnels, the
analysis of soil dynamics and seismic engineering, and reliability and risk analysis
relating to geotechnical engineering.
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Members of the staff of Tonias Engineers have participated in and/or directed
the planning design and construction inspection of expressways, arterials and streets
in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The experience includes: route location and
alignment (horizontal and vertical) design, interchange (including multi-levels)
design, highway drainage, earthwork, pavement, traffic control, parking layout,
construction cost estimates and construction stakeout, inspection and material
testing.
MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING
The staff of Tonias Engineers through many years of experience have directed and/or
designed numerous facilities within such urbanized communities as Rochester, New York,
Hornell, New York, Columbus, Ohio and Syracuse, New York. Projects include the study,
design, construction and/or repair of streets, water supply and transmission, solid
waste management, storm, sanitary and combined sewers, recreational areas and other
facilities necessary for the healthy and expedient function of the communities.
WATER POLLUTION CONTROL
Due to the national emphasis on water quality and elimination of point-source
pollution, members of Tonias Engineers have been engaged in a wide range of study,
design and construction inspection services on intercepting sewers, collection
systems, storage and conveyance tunnels, pump stations and holding tanks. Extensive
knowledge and development of computer models have been employed by Tonias Engineers
in such tasks as hydraulic transients, infiltration-inflow analysis, combined
sewer and stormwater management, sewer evaluation, computer operated gate control and
sewer system design.
FLOOD CONTROL
The staff of Tonias Engineers has been involved in the three basic aspects of flood
related projects: planning, design and construction, and flood effects and evaluation. Its
experience includes such types of projects:
More and more municipalities desire their consultants to submit their digital data in a format that can be integrated in the municipality's GIS. Tonias Engineers has been involved with GIS since 1987 and possesses the ability to provide municipal clients data in Esri's ArcGIS format as well as a number of other popular digital formats. Tonias Engineers has a strong business relationship with The CEDRA Corporation, a leading supplier of GIS software and services. As such, Tonias Engineers is able to provide integrated engineering and GIS capabilities for their clients.
